John Hanratty – Shotokan – Ep145

In this episode, I am joined by a seasoned martial artist and author with an impressive 54-year journey in Karate, having dedicated 42 years to teaching in Calgary. As the coach of the Karate All Styles team for an impressive 17 years, my guest’s expertise extends far and wide.

In 1990 and 1991, he clinched the title of Canadian Masters Champion, marking a significant achievement in his illustrious career. Currently serving as the chief instructor for the Canadian Shotokan Association, he has become a central figure in the Karate community.

Beyond his local impact, my guest has conducted seminars across North America and Europe, solidifying his reputation as a leading authority on Karate Kata History and application. Alongside his martial arts pursuits, he shares a life with his wife Julie, a Shodan, and their daughter Jenna, who married one of his black belts. The family has grown with the addition of a beloved granddaughter.

Despite his intense commitment to Karate, my guest finds joy in a different arena—the golf course. His passion for the sport reflects a well-rounded and fulfilling life outside the dojo.

Join us as we delve into the rich experiences and insights of this remarkable martial artist.
